The diving gondola moored at the Sellin pier looks like a prop from a film. The fascinating object invites you to get to know the fascinating underwater world of the Baltic Sea under the same pressure conditions as on land. The gondola sinks to a depth of four metres and stops one metre above the seabed.
On the diving station, you learn interesting facts about the Baltic Sea habitat and the animals and plants that can be observed outside the windows, depending on visibility and season. Even during the descent, the crew imparts exciting knowledge about the Baltic Sea, its special features and its endangerment. Another window into the world of the seas is opened by a 3D underwater film about the Baltic Sea. The impressive film presents the youngest sea on earth and its inhabitants.
The fish we usually only encounter on the menus of Rügen’s fish restaurants, such as flounder and eel, can be observed here as living creatures. Eared jellyfish, tiny plankton creatures, nimble shrimps and majestic flatfish move across seagrass meadows and sandy bottoms. From the Baltic Sea to the Great Barrier Reef and the Bahamas, another 3D film impressively illustrates the importance of coral reefs for the entire planet.
The inventor of the diving gondola is Andreas Wulff, a designer from Wolgast, who developed and realised the project together with his partner, marine biologist Volker Miske from Greifswald. The diving gondolas are built in Wusterhusen near Greifswald. The conservation partner is the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The diving gondola is open all year round, so you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to follow the changing seasons under water.
