The Jagdschloss crowns the 107-metre-high Tempelberg. A cantilever staircase leads up 154 steps to the central tower and offers one of the most beautiful views of the island of Rügen. Stately trophies, exciting guided tours and the “Wirtshaus im Jagdschloss” in the vaulted cellar make the Jagdschloss an attractive destination.
Prince Wilhelm Malte I zu Putbus invited his friends to Putbus or to his Jagdschloss on the Tempelberg. The magnificent building was erected between 1837 and 1851 and designed by the famous architect Johann Gottfried Steinmeyer. Four crenellated turrets are crowned by a 38-metre-high central tower that invites you to climb up. The staircase is a masterpiece, as it runs unsupported along the inside of the tower and consists of cast-iron steps.
Built in neo-Gothic style, the Jagdschloss Granitz offers a trophy collection and representative salons in a historical ambience. An exhibition and lively guided tours provide details on the history of the building, who all were guests here and how the princely hunt was conducted. For children, there are programmes where they can get active themselves to discover the treasures of the castle and a themed playground on game and forest.
Truly valuable nature experiences are doubly protected on Rügen. The approximately 1000 hectare forest area near Sellin is one of them. The Granitz was placed under nature conservation because beech and sessile oak trees, kettle bogs, peat meadows and forest lakes have created a unique biotope there. The enchanted forest is also part of the UNESCO Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve, which has set up an exhibition and information centre in the Granitzhaus at the Jagdschloss.
