Bernsteinmuseum Sellin Kinzel

A nice museum takes you to a strange world

It leads you to those bygone times, when the tree’s resin became amber. It shows the pretty gifts, rough-and-ready sailors crafted for their darlings during long journeys on the high seas, and it allows us to join in baking bread the traditional way. The former farmers, fishermen and sailors of Rügen are proud of their ancient history, that is why they pay tribute to it with these interesting small museums. In Sellin you find the only amber museum on Rügen. Goldsmith Jürgen Kintzel runs it as a private initiative. Museum Seafarer’s Home exhibits objects of the fishermen’s and seafarers’ working life and personal experience and also owns an important fossil collection. At Altensien mill site, you learn something about the history of the once numerous mills on Rügen. On Mönchgut peninsula there are seven museums dedicated to the cultural heritage of the region, amongst them a local museum, a school museum, a former pilots’ tower and a museum ship.
