The Fascination of Amber in Sellin

The little private museum of goldsmith Jürgen Kintzel is the only amber museum on Rügen. It presents raw amber from all over the world and from all times. There are many inclusions among them, stones including plant material or insects, which once were caught in the sticky resin of trees. These transparent coffins are like windows into geological history. However, the museum also shows how pearls are made, presents precious jewels from Königsberg jewellery, objects made of pressed amber and cheap imitations. 40 to 50mio years ago, subtropical forests covered the Scandinavian region. At that time the Baltic amber developed. It is the basis of the museum. Notice boards and showcases convey knowledge on amber in a sound and entertaining way.
